Geodis: Integrated tailored approval process

Interview with Fariba Moghadam – Corporate Credit Manager of Geodis Wilson

Geodis is one of the world’s largest transport companies. The backbone of Geodis Wilson is an independent network of branches and hubs via air and sea connections in 61 countries, with a strong presence in Europe, America and the APAC region. Geodis Wilson also has offices in the Middle East and Africa. Altares Dun & Bradstreet has developed a tailor-made solution using Mendix technology. The end product, the Geodis Decision Maker, has taken credit approval to a higher level and further professionalised the creditworthiness assessment.

1. The challenge

Global coverage

Before the collaboration with Altares Dun & Bradstreet, all countries within the Geodis Wilson group worked independently with their own credit information provider. The head office realised that a more consistent approach would significantly improve the documentation and analysis of risk assessment. By choosing the global D&B network, they created a uniform process for the different countries. With 40 countries using one global supplier, the challenge arose to connect users within different countries to one system. In addition, they wanted to use different country-specific approval processes in a single workflow.

All-in-one

After reviewing the standard solutions offered by Altares Dun & Bradstreet, Geodis came to the conclusion that a workflow tool was needed for: integrated data, online access, integrated approval procedure, pre-calculation of credit limits, email and reporting functionalities.

Together with a technical consultant from Altares Dun & Bradstreet, it was decided that the Mendix platform could meet these needs perfectly. It combines D&B data with an integrated approval workflow tailored to Geodis Wilson, according to the internal control guidelines.

In GDM, I have an overall view of the standard thresholds per country. The fact that I can change the threshold value from a standard to an adapted system in GDM is proof of a high level of flexibility. In addition, I can also request reports for each country in order to trace and monitor the usage”

2. The solution

The Geodis Decision Maker systeem (GDM) designed based on the Mendix-platform

The Geodis Decision Maker system (GDM) designed based on the Mendix platform has all the required functions for workflow management and approval thresholds. A consistent audit for credit approvals was guaranteed from the lowest input level to the highest authority level.

The calculation of the credit limit level based on net sales and payment terms (and customs fees or import duties) is also integrated in the workflow. During the different processes in this approval process, each approver can add comments or upload relevant information to support the decision of the credit limit. The design of the user reports is simple and clear but provides enough information to give a clear picture of the requested customer.

Implementation in each phase

After the design of the system, the operation and user interface were tested for more than 6 weeks with one of the larger units before going live and implementing the rollout to all other countries.

The next stages of development: Now that the initial approval of (new) customers has been properly integrated, Geodis wants to monitor existing customers with this tool by using information from Altares Dun & Bradstreet in combination with Mendix technology.

3. The result

Efficiency, time savings and everyone on board

For a multinational company like Geodis Wilson, which works with different levels of authority, this workflow tool offered global knowledge of (new) customers at headquarters level. In addition, it has also helped the various countries to eliminate unnecessary manual input to the source. The online D&B connection is time-saving because it provides the desired identification information in a few clicks. Communication has generally improved throughout the credit approval channel.
